Old/New. How does America relate to foreigners, and what steps does the military do to protect/preserve American soil? I’m interested in creating a monument for this Tar River lookout point. The public work will exist for a region once populated by traditional pirates—the most famous was William Teach, ie. Blackbeard. Today, East Carolina continues to be inhabited by pirates. However, plundering and pillaging has been replaced by ECU sports: The Pirate football, baseball, and basketball (etc.) teams. I believe the historical connotations of a pirate, in comparison with the contemporary ideologies of piracy, defense systems, and weaponry, may supersede the anxieties American culture has on protecting a vernacular landscape. Anyone have a turret gun I can borrow?
