Bio
Adam Jacono is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Cecil College in Maryland, and served as a 2010-11 curatorial intern for the VASA photographic project with A.D. Coleman. Adam edits a quarterly online magazine called UntitledCereal—a project dedicated to the promotion and publication of student photo-based media. Last year, Adam presented at the Southeast SPE conference in Tallahassee, FL and he was a visiting lecturer in Photography at the University of South Carolina. His work has been collected by Scott Avett, Michael Stipe, and he’s recently exhibited at Vox Populi in Philadelphia, and Preteen Gallery in Mexico City. Adam received an MFA from East Carolina University in 2010 and loved every minute of it.

Artist Statement
Adam Jacono’s artwork examines the relationship of advertising, consumerism and mass media to American culture. His artistic practice combines alternative and traditional photographic processes to reference history, in combination with digital photography, video, web, performance, and printmaking. Jacono’s work is technically multidimensional and utilizes multiple modes of production, allowing concept to shape the end product. Through image-based media, he invites viewers to examine their own perceptions of culture, art, and identity.

Jacono’s artwork is largely influenced by the American culture that surrounds us, a culture which de␣nes and often determines how we perceive ourselves. A recent mural piece entitled Consumer Inoperable includes twelve hundred magazine pages that were rolled-up to hide, disable, and fragment the viewers’ relationship with the printed advertising media. Each magazine page is rolled to expose only snippets of information—preventing the viewer from recognizing the object being sold, and therefore thwarting consumption. In another work entitled The Secret, Jacono comments on how society is class driven, cyclical, and connected by the exchange of currency and the desire of objects. His work simultaneously critiques consumer culture while participating in it with screen prints, wallpaper, posters, and t-shirts. Printing on consumable objects allows for a further level of engagement with participants, transforming his art into a commodity; the work anticipates cultural desires.

Jacono’s artwork utilizes digital and traditional photographic media, he uses the alternative photographic processes of brown van dyke and blueprints (in reference to a structural and foundational archetype), and screen printing. He has created camera obscuras in galleries and his own home, web-based projects about advertising culture, and performative video works. Jacono’s work continues to draw a line between mass media and individual consciousness with modes of production based in image-based media.
